He is organist of the Nieuwe Kerk in Groningen (a classicistic organ with 3 manuals, 1831). He is considered as a specialist of improvisations in historical styles from the Renaissance to the 21th century. He is also soloist and continuist in some orchestras.

Nowadays he is an experienced international organ adviser. In cooperation with the Government Department for the Care of Cultural Heritage and the Organ Committee of the Protestant Churches in The Netherlands he is involved in the restoration and construction of organs in the Netherlands. He and others are responsible for the preservation of Dutch organs. In that quality he advised over a hundred projects up till now.

Stef Tuinstra is the leader of the North-Dutch-Organ Academy (NNOA) and teaches organ, harpsichord, piano, church music, improvisation, accompaniment of congregational singing and organ-building. He develops stimulation activities in the north of The Netherlands as well. The extraordinary quality of  the many historical organs in the area, especially in the province of Groningen, and their well-organized exploitation offer attractive possibilities for these activities.
Stef Tuinstra is playing and teaching in recitals, lectures and master classes in various European countries, Japan and the USA.
He is also author of several international publications about organbuilding and -playing.

His recordings appeared on several CD’s. CD’s of his own label NNOA get worldwide excellent critiques and are considered as original in interpretation and registration, giving new directions to the interpretation of older organ music. His interpretations did not lose any topicality over the last decades.
Two of the recordings in which he participated got a shared Edison-award and his recent recording with the integral organ works of Georg Böhm (3-cd album on the label Document) is assessed by the international trade press as a top production.
